The Minnesota Vikings made an intriguing trade deadline move by acquiring Josh Dobbs in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. It was a move that many saw coming after Kirk Cousins went down with a torn Achilles. However, what wasn’t expected is just how quickly Dobbs would be able to make his presence felt in Minnesota.
Right off the bat in Week 9, Dobbs was forced onto the field after an injury was sustained by starting quarterback Jaren Hall. He immediately took control and leadership over the team and was able to lead the Vikings to a big 31-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Following the game, it’s clear that the Vikings may have something in Dobbs. He has shown flashes throughout his career of being a quality NFL starter. Now, it appears the team may be eyeing a long-term future with Dobbs if he continues playing at a high level.
One former NFL executive spoke to NFL Analysis Network about Dobbs and his long-term future with Minnesota. He even stated that the Vikings could consider keeping Dobbs over Cousins.
“The Vikings have fallen in love with Josh Dobbs since they acquired him. I actually think they could stick with him over Kirk Cousins after this season. It’s certainly something to watch.”
Could The Vikings Consider Josh Dobbs As Their Long-Term Quarterback?
In his debut performance with the Vikings, Dobbs ended up completing 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 158 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also picked up 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground in seven attempts. Those numbers are impressive, to say the least.
He may not be the type of quarterback to regularly throw for 300 yards, but he’s consistent and he doesn’t make a ton of mistakes.
Prior to being traded to the Vikings, Dobbs played in six games with the Cardinals. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions in those appearances, while also racking up 258 yards and three scores on the ground.
At 28 years of age, Dobbs still has plenty of time left in his prime. He is more than capable of being a four or five-year starter if he can cement himself somewhere in a good situation. Dobbs hasn’t even been able to play with superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson yet.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes for Josh Dobbs on the Vikings. If he continues making plays and leading the team to wins, a long-term future in Minnesota seems very possible.
