Uncertain 2022 Sooners Football Season: Back on Track

The uncertain 2022 Sooners football season has looked like a train wreck at times. At this point, I truly believe that this Sooners football program is unified, focused, and back on track. After the team started out strong with a 3-0 record only to be derailed by losing 3 straight and having a what many would consider a disastrous season. However after beating Kansas and now Iowa St., the team appears to be rising from the ashes and getting back on track in 2022.

    Uncertain 2022 Sooners Football Season

I’ll admit that at the beginning of the 2022 season, I was onboard and believed the hype that Coach Venables and his staff could quickly improve this program through rapid improvements on defense while still sustaining a top offensive unit. That belief quickly faded after QB Dillion Gabriel went down with an injury and the offense struggled to produce points while the defense looked lost at times. It was evident that we lack QB depth and the defense is still a work in progress. Though I was frustrated with how the season has gone, I truly believe that Coach Venables will build this program to where it needs to be to compete in the SEC.

    Uncertain: Eating Crow

Like many other fans, I bought into the Sooners hype at the beginning of the 2022 season. I wrote an article earlier this year about how I expected to this team to have a successful season. https://gridironheroics.com/sooner-season-over-under-odds-set-at-9-5/

I should have taken off my crimson colored glasses and realized that it is much harder to build a program up to compete for a championship than just adding a new coach. There must be enough talent to make the switch. The Sooners simply didn’t have the required talent to be the team I expected them to be, which led to the downfall of my high expectations during this uncertain season.

I’m not trying to knock any of the current 2022 roster.. I truly respect them for not giving up and continuing to get back up and move forward. There was a line in a movie that stated, “But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.” (Rocky Balboa, 2006). This team is proving to all of us that it is mentally tough and ready to weather the storm and keep moving forward.

    Back on Track

One reason I believe these unified Sooners are back on track and headed in the right direction is due to witnessing the resiliency of this team after suffering three losses and an embarrassing defeat to Texas, this team didn’t quit and rebounded to win the next two games. Many teams have simply quit and given up after scenarios like this, while this Sooner squad did not. Another reason I still believe that this team is on track is that the current highly ranked recruiting class is still committed. We haven’t had any defectors at this point, which shows that the future athletes still believe and are bought into this staff and direction of the program.

Back on Track: Reason to Believe

This Sooners team is proving to be unified to complete the mission. Though they have not lived up to the lofty expectations of the Sooner fan base, they are showing that this is a different team than a year ago. This current team is here to stay. There aren’t thoughts of moving on to other programs. The dedication and motivation of this staff and the current roster is only going to improve and become a better version for the next week.

    Sooners Football: Building a Foundation

The different mindset and mentality of these unified Sooners will carry forward throughout this season and into the future as Coach Venables builds this program into the monster that we all expect. It will take a little more time than most of us expected but it will definitely be worth it when the program is built. Though this current roster hasn’t given us the championship caliber team we wanted, they are truly the foundation of what will once again be a great dynasty in college football.

I truly believe that our Sooners are unified, focused and back on track!!!
