The Dallas Cowboys’ 2022 first-round pick Tyler Smith is impressing the coaching staff with his reps as both an offensive tackle and guard.
The 24th overall selection presented mixed reactions from fans and analysts. Experts suggested that Dallas should have drafted Jermaine Johnson to replace Randy Gregory and improve their much-needed pass rush troubles. However, the Cowboys have had their eyes on Smith, and Dallas loves what they have seen.
Smith’s strength is his run blocking. Pro Football Focus graded him with a 93.9 run-blocking grade, ranking the highest among any American Athletic Conference offensive tackle. His ability to hook defensive linemen and create room for the running backs caught Dallas’ attention.
The Cowboys love Smith’s aggression and physicality. At 6-5, 324 lbs, the offensive lineman possesses an alpha mentality at a young age. With his size and mentality, McCarthy shared that Smith appears more comfortable as a guard.
With the first-rounder working at two positions, it creates extra chances for Smith. Dallas’ objective is to create as many successful opportunities for their new offensive lineman. He is making a big statement at guard but will fill in at the tackle position if necessary.
With eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith locking down the left tackle position, Dallas hopes to pair the rookie on the left side as a guard. Tyron Smith has been injury prone the last few seasons. One Smith could potentially replace another at tackle in the future. He has previously taken first-team reps at the left tackle position.
Star players Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot, and Michah Parsons are obsessed with the strength Smith presents on the offensive line, and all believe he will make an immediate impact on their squad. If he lives up to the expectations, the duo of him and Zach Martin at guard could bring back the tradition of a dominant offensive line and a powerful run-blocking team.
Why should fans have another reason to be excited? There is no surprise the rookie is donning the same jersey number as Hall of Famer Larry Allen. Smith so happens to be practicing at the same position. The potential is high, and the future is bright for the new big man at camp.
