Notre Dame has announced that sophomore QB Tyler Buchner will be the starting QB for opening week. “This is something we looked at last year, the spring, the summer, the start of fall camp, the entire body of work. We just felt like it was time to give the offense clarity on who was starting quarterback,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman told the media.
Freeman went further into the on-field factors that figured into the decision. “Tyler brings a dynamic element with his feet, the ability to extend plays, and have a QB running game. That added into this decision.”

Buchner and junior Drew Pyne were engaged in a long QB battle. It lasted from spring all the way into early fall camp. But now, it seems that chapter of uncertainty has closed, and the Irish are moving forward with Buchner.
Tyler Buchner Profile
Buchner stands at 6’1 215 pounds. He was a top 100 recruit in the class of 2021, slotting in at No. 71 on 247’s composite rankings. Buchner is a dynamic athlete who can make plays in space, as well as throw on the run. Moreover, he’s shown great accuracy on the deep ball. Buchner is also great at escaping the pocket and extending plays. Certainly, Buchner has all the physical tools needed to succeed at the college level.
However, Notre Dame needs Buchner to play his best immediately. This is because their first game will be on the road at Ohio State. The Buckeyes will have a high-powered offense led by QB CJ Stroud and WR Jaxon-Smith Njigba. ND’s offense will have to produce if they want any shot at winning the game.
