ESPN announcer Troy Aikman can provide color commentary for a football game with the best of them. But the Dallas Cowboys legend can’t outrun one of his old comments about Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes secured his third Super Bowl ring on Sunday after beating the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Chiefs star was surgical late in the 25-22 overtime victory to seal Super Bowl LVIII in his favor.
Mahomes’ new Super Bowl tally of three also means that he’s now tied with Aikman, who also won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys during the ’90s. Why does that matter, you ask?
Fans Aren’t Forgetting Troy Aikman’s Post About Patrick Mahomes From 2019
In 2019, The Athletic’s official Twitter account sent out a tweet noting that Mahomes, at the time, had thrown 36% of Aikman’s career touchdowns in just 8% of the games played.
Mahomes had yet to win a Super Bowl at that point, which made Aikman’s response completely valid.
“Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl titles,” Aikman wrote in September 2019.

While a witty comeback at the time, Mahomes would end up winning his first Super Bowl a few months later — the equivalent of 33% of Aikman’s Super Bowls, Now after the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl wins, Mahomes has officially garnered 100% of the Dallas Cowboys icon’s Super Bowls.

The Dallas Cowboys QB Will Continue To Go Viral Whenever Mahomes Wins Another Super Bowl
It’s safe to assume that the percentage will keep getting updated every year that Mahomes wins another Super Bowl. Based on his current trajectory, it doesn’t seem likely that he ends up with just three.
Aikman, however, was simply defending himself from a cherrypicked tweet at the time. How could he have known that Mahomes would turn into the NFL’s best bet to overtake Tom Brady?
Aikman played 165 games and threw exactly 165 touchdowns as well — a perfect 1:1 ratio. Mahomes has since eclipsed that mark with 219 regular season TDs in just 96 games played.
In Aikman’s defense, he played in an era where passing wasn’t as emphasized as it is today. He was also the signal caller for a Dallas Cowboys team that employed superstar running back Emmitt Smith and one of the best offensive lines in NFL history. Aikman didn’t need to pass for touchdowns when Smith could very easily finish the job whenever Dallas was in the red zone.
Nonetheless, Aikman’s name will continue to go viral like clockwork the next time Mahomes wins it all.
