San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk gave his opinion on Trey Lance and a quarterback battle from the 2022 season. Aiyuk prefers one of his former teammates with whom he was close.
San Francisco 49ers QBs have been a popular topic
Questions about who was or is a better quarterback for the 49ers have been a popular question on podcasts since the Super Bowl. Former 49ers player Patrick Willis said he thinks Colin Kaepernick would beat out Brock Purdy if they had come in at the same time in the league.
Brandon Aiyuk prefers Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo
Aiyuk was asked on Instagram Live about another famous quarterback battle in San Francisco. Would Aiyuk want to catch a ball from Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance? Per Madison Williams with Sports Illustrated, Aiyuk said he preferred Lance.
“It’s really an easy question, bro,” Aiyuk said on Instagram Live. “I’ll go Trey Lance.”
Per David Bonilla with 49ers WebZone, Aiyuk’s answer made sense, as Lance and Aiyuk spent time together as friends:
In 2022, Aiyuk offered a glimpse into their offseasons together, saying, “This second year, we got to stay in the house together with a couple of other people and just hang out by the fire, talk, really just get to know who he is, and him getting to know who I am outside of playing football because that’s really the only time we get to see each other. So being in there a couple of weeks, and working hard, putting in hours, grinding together, and then hanging out, just chilling afterward. It’s cool. It’s a great thing.”
One has to wonder how Aiyuk is feeling with Purdy. Aiyuk had a monster All-Pro season in 2023, recording over 1,300 receiving yards. However, people close to Aiyuk, including his girlfriend, suggested he could try to leave in the offseason after not seeing many throws from Purdy in the 49ers’ Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lance could be headed to the Minnesota Vikings
While the 49ers believe Aiyuk will be with the team long-term, they parted ways with his friend last summer when they traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance is currently tied with Justin Fields for the best odds of being the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback to start the 2024 regular season.
