The San Francisco 49ers pretty much left the football world shellshocked after it was revealed that Sam Darnold had surpassed Trey Lance as the team’s QB2 behind Brock Purdy. To add even more drama to this stunning turn of events, Lance was nowhere to be found on the practice field on Wednesday, as the young quarterback decided to skip camp amid his shocking demotion.
Trey Lance Knew About Demotion Before It Went Public
It was league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network who first dropped the news about Lance being the Niners’ new third-string QB. Despite some suspicion surrounding the same, however, Pelissero himself made it clear that it wasn’t his tweet that broke the news to Lance:
“Trey Lance knew,” Pelissero said 95.7 the Game in San Francisco (h/t Kyle Madson of Niners Wire). “Sam Darnold had been told that he was gonna be the number 2. There was communication. Again, I’ll let Kyle and those guys talk on exactly what happened today, but everyone knew. Everyone was on board with Trey not being there today. No, I don’t think it’s an issue with the relationship. Trey’s not that type of guy. I’m sure he’s just disappointed and frustrated and all those things, but it’s not a ‘bleep you’ type of situation from everything that I understand.”
As the NFL Network insider revealed, Lance was already well aware of the fact that he was getting the demotion before the information went public. Nevertheless, this did little to soften the blow for San Francisco’s ex-future cornerstone quarterback.
Trey Lance Has ‘Intense Disappointment’ Over 49ers’ QB Decision
Pelissero provided more information regarding Lance’s decision to skip practice on Wednesday. The reporter confirmed reports that the young quarterback is indeed feeling very disappointed with these developments:
“The fact that Trey Lance wasn’t on the field today probably gives you a pretty good indication of what this is,” Pelissero said. “And that doesn’t mean this was a storm out of the building type of situation, but there’s an intense disappointment when, by all accounts, he’s made strides through the course of this offseason and it still wasn’t good enough. So, he takes a day away at this point.”
I mean, who wouldn’t be disappointed if you were in Trey Lance’s shoes? Be that as it may, Pelissero seems to be reporting that Lance has been relatively professional amid these unfavorable developments — all things considered, of course.
