It has been a long season for Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams. Now, he is making headlines again with his latest comments on the Rich Eisen Show.
During an interview with Rich Eisen, Adams admitted that he missed having QB Derek Carr around and that he came to Las Vegas specifically to play with him.
“I came here to play with Derek. I can’t say I would have been here if he wasn’t there… it definitely hurt not having him (Derek Carr) around.” -Davante Adams
Davante Adams and Derek Carr Backstory
Some people may think that this is just a reaction to having a down season after putting up one great season in Las Vegas with Derek Carr. Those people do not know how far back this goes.
Believe it or not, Carr and Adams were teammates at college. The reason this may be overlooked is because both players came out of Fresno State. They were both drafted during the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Carr was taken 36th overall by the then Oakland Raiders and Adams was taken 53rd overall by the Green Bay Packers.
They would have to wait eight years before they could reunite. However, they still kept a close friendship throughout that time.
Davante Adams became a free agent during the 2022 offseason. He decided to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders and reunite with Carr.
Things did not turn out as well as they hoped in terms of team success. The Raiders went just 6-11 during the 2022 season.
Statistically, Adams had one of the best seasons of his NFL career last year. He had 100 catches for 1,516 receiving yards and 14 touchdown receptions.
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse at the end of the 2022 NFL season. The Raiders made it clear that they were ready to move off of Carr after nine seasons. He was cut unceremoniously at the end of the season before he was eligible for over $40 million in guaranteed money.
That led him to sign with the New Orleans Saints this past offseason. As a result, it left Davante Adams stranded in the desert of Las Vegas with uncertainty at the quarterback position.
Where Are Adams and the Las Vegas Raiders Now?
Eventually, the Las Vegas Raiders did sign veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo to replace Carr. However, it has not gone the way that Adams would have hoped.
Through seven games of the 2023 NFL season, Adams has 528 receiving yards and just three touchdown receptions.
Team chemistry also appears to be lacking this season. The Raiders are 2-0 when Adams has fewer than six receptions in a game. They are just 1-4 when he has six or more receptions.
It also does not help that Garoppolo is once again facing injury concerns. He missed the Raiders’ Week 7 games against the Chicago Bears due to a back injury and at the time of writing, there is no certainty as to if he will play on Monday night against the Detroit Lions.
The NFL trade deadline is October 31st at 4 p.m. EST. That is about 16 hours after the Monday night game is expected to conclude.
Right now, Adams has another guaranteed year on his contract before a potential out. If Las Vegas loses on Monday night against Detroit, one has to wonder if this will be the end of Adams’ tenure with the Raiders.
