The Steelers had a big need for depth behind TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith. With uncertainty around guys like Hamilcar Rashed and Derek Tuszka there was a glaring hole. With Rashed being cut today prior to the deadline the Steelers made their move. The Steelers sent a 6th round pick to the Denver Broncos for Malik Reed and a 7th round pick.
Malik Reed
Reed was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Broncos in 2019. He was quickly thrusted into starting for the Broncos and has been pretty solid racking up 15 sacks. He set a career high in 2020 with 8 sacks then followed up with 5 in 2021. This is a great move by the Steelers. He will immediately upgrade the position and provide the depth needed. The Steelers like to play rotations to keep guys fresh, having Malik will aid that. He may be the best back up OLB the Steelers have had in some time excluding Alex Highsmith.
Overall he is still a very young guy with plenty of starting experience to help boost the unit. I would say so far Omar Kahn has been off to a hot start as a GM. He has more moves to make if they Steelers have a chance to be a serious threat.
As always thanks for reading! You can always find great Steelers content here on the Gridiron Heroics.
