The Arizona Cardinals are definitely in firesale mode. The quarterback class for 2024 looks to be one of the best in recent years and the Cardinals would like to secure a top pick. The Cardinals sold off one of their key pieces on defense Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants.
Arizona Cardinals Trade Isaiah Simmons To The New York Giants
Simmons was the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was traded for a seventh-round pick per NFL insider Adam Schefter. The value that the team got back shows how desperate they are to get rid of good pieces. His being in the last year of his contract was also a big reason why the Cardinals shipped him off. The team is rebuilding and does not want to have large veteran contracts coming on the books right now. While Simmons has not lived up to the hype, he still has played well and could contribute to a team.
Love This For The Giants
I love this trade for the Giants. They give up nothing. A seventh-round pick is a flyer on a player that you hope can be a special teams player if you are lucky. The Giants get a proven linebacker to add to their defense. With Wink Martindale heading up the defense, Simmons becomes a versatile piece he can use. Martindale loves to blitz and Simmons will be able to blitz or cover backs and tight ends. It is a great move for a Giants’ defense that has a lot of nice young pieces.
The Isaiah Simmons trade makes sense for the Arizona Cardinals. While it hurts to give up a top-ten pick for basically nothing, it would feel worse to pay him a huge contract and have it stunt the growth of young players.
