Before Cam Newton and Gene Chizik, Auburn football had Jason Campbell and Tommy Tuberville. Campbell, the signal-caller from the undefeated 2004 team, enjoyed ten seasons in the NFL before transitioning to a low-profile media gig with Auburn Sports Network radio. However, Tuberville, after four more years with the Tigers and short stints with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Cincinnati Bearcats, dove head first into the hectic world of politics, eventually becoming the current United States Senator for the state of Alabama.
Tuberville, who usurped Democratic incumbent Doug Jones in 2020, has cultivated numerous headlines during his four-year political run, including trying to overturn Joe Biden’s presidential victory in 2020 and blocking all promotions of senior officers in the U.S. military for much of 2023. With Tuberville firmly entrenched in the weekly new cycle (mainly for all the wrong reasons), it was only a matter of time before an old story from his coaching days came to light.
Tyler Siskey: Coveys Shocking Tommy Tuberville Story
Earlier this week on the McCready and Siskey Podcast, co-host Tyler Siskey shared a story about his experiences with former Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville. Siskey, who considered himself a not-so-talented wide receiver at Auburn, recounted his brief few moments with Tuberville that would eventually shape the college football landscape. Siskey, a receiver at Auburn, was enrolled at the university when the Tigers poached their new frontman, Tuberville, from Ole Miss (although he swore less than a week later it would take them carrying him out in a “pine box” to leave Oxford).
In short, Tommy Tuberville joined the Auburn Tigers in 1999, and after signing six wide receivers in the upcoming recruiting class, called Siskey into his office, telling him that he would never play for the Auburn football program.
Tuberville said, “Tyler, I signed six wide receivers yesterday. If you have any more aspirations of running out of that tunnel, it will be on the visiting sideline. Would you like your release?”
Siskey, succumbing from the pressure presented by Tuberville, said yes, with the bench boss immediately handing him his already signed and printed release papers. Tuberville’s lack of decency and respect for the holdovers players carried over past Siskey, with the wideout also sharing a story of how one of his friends got released from his scholarship post-practice without warning. Tuberville went on to post a respectful 85-40 record at Auburn but faltered in his final season, posting his first losing season since 1999. What makes the Tyler Siskey story so interesting is Tuberville’s quick fall off in 2008, and subsequent resignation could have been avoided if not for his treatment of the receiver and his friend years prior.
Siskey: Karma Catches Up to Tuberville
Siskey, after transferring to Troy, immediately transitioned into coaching. He eventually landed a gig at powerhouse St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama, operating as the team’s offensive coordinator during their 2007 5A championship run. When Tuberville came knocking for recruits, mainly standout quarterback A.J. McCarron and hard-hitting safety Mark Barron, he came front and center with Siskey. Although Tuberville tried to downplay his treatment of Siskey heading into the 1999 season, the now offensive-minded guru said, “If they ask me about you, I’m going to tell them the truth.” McCarron went on to win three titles with the Alabama Crimson Tide, while Barron, also with Alabama, became an All-American and future first-round pick.
Most Recent Tuberville Report: Auburn Football Fans React
The horror story surrounding former Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville is disturbing, with his lack of empathy towards certain players being a massive red flag. However, many college football and Auburn devotees don’t seem shocked by the recent report surrounding the longtime bench boss. Tuberville remains one of the most criticized senators in America while also receiving an alarming lack of endorsements from former players and coaches. Many fans took to Twitter (also known as X) to share their thought’s about Tyler Siskey’s Tuberville story, poking fun at the old Auburn head coach.
No surprise here. Tommy Tuberville is about as slimy as they come. pic.twitter.com/GKp48UgaHz

Tommy Tuberville, while head coach at Texas Tech, left a recruit *in the middle of dinner* to go take another job (from which he was ultimately fired). One of the slimier ones in a profession full of them (football coaches AND legislators). https://t.co/GLcA3tsWHV
