There are plenty of narratives surrounding Tom Brady’s legendary football career. While there are plenty of things that made his career so special, one of the biggest storylines that drove his story forwad was the fact that he had a terrible NFL Draft Combine when he was selected in the 2000 Draft.
Compared to the athletes of today, he didn’t have the most impressive body nor an incredible 40-yard-dash time. His performance during the combine made it clear why he chosen in the latter stages of the draft.
Now that he’s won everything in the sport, he’s trying to change the narrative surrounding his combine scores. He’s going to have another go at the 40-yard dash to show that he’s become a much better athlete nowadays compared to 24 years ago.
Tom Brady beats his 2000 NFL Combine 40-yard dash
Tom Brady announced that he would attempt to re-do his 40 time of 5.28 seconds way back in 2001, even going so far as to ask for bets on whether the 46-year-old would be able to beat his record.
The Spun’s Kameron Duncan wrote about the preparation Brady took for this challenge:
The former quarterback released a video on social media on Wednesday that shows him preparing to run the 40-yard-dash, and he asked fans to “drop your predictions.”
Considering that Brady was never one of the fastest players at the position – even in his prime – the prognosis doesn’t look great.
Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells wrote about the results, and the final number was pretty surprising:
There was some dispute among the people who timed Brady’s recent run. TMZ noted one person had his time at 5.18 seconds, while a second person had it at 5.12 seconds.
Regardless of which one is accurate, there’s no denying that Brady has once again found a way to defy all normal logic regarding an athlete’s body. He just enjoyed his first year of retirement after a historic 23-season run in the NFL, yet still kept himself in good enough shape to run an impressive 40 time considering his age.
The faster 40 time is a testament to the amount of care Tom Brady puts on his body. He’s well known for his TB12 diet, though some questioned whether it was even effective at all. However, there must be something in the water he’s drinking because he’s in even better physical shape than he was two decades ago.
Even if his professional and personal life has completely changed from twenty years ago, there’s one thing we can be sure of: Tom Brady will continue to pursue excellence in whatever he decides to do.
