    The Struggles of Baker Mayfield!

What's wrong with Baker Mayfield? Is he ever going to live up to the hype of being the #1 overall pick in the 2018 Draft?

He has been in the NFL for a little over 4 season now and it hasn’t been pretty for Baker Mayfield. To be honest, I have no idea how he is still a starting QB in this league! He has rarely even shown flashes of why he was chosen as the #1 overall pick in the draft.  Let’s dive inside the numbers and see what’s wrong with Baker Mayfield.

    The Struggles of Baker Mayfield

It’s painful to watch him play sometimes, and it’s obvious that the struggles of Baker Mayfield are real. Baker is 30-34 as a starting QB in this league. You can look at that and say that he isn’t that bad. Keep in mind that he got a lot of those losses while having a Top 3 running game and a solid offensive line for most of his years in Cleveland. If you give a #1 pick an elite running game and offensive line, you would assume that is the recipe for success. Baker was the main reason why the Browns never hit their peak with their rebuild. He had many issues including being very predictable.

In his 4 seasons with the Browns, he completed 61.6% of his passes, had 95 TD’s, 57 INT’s with a QB Rating of 87.5. These numbers are not going to cut it and there were no excuses. It’s not like he had a terrible roster around him. To go along with these stats, he also gets a lot of balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. This could have to do with the fact that he isn’t very tall and could also explain why he tries to roll out to the right a lot.

This season with the Panthers has been even worse for Baker. This was supposed to be the season he shows the Browns that they made a big mistake, but it’s obvious that the Browns made the right decision.  Baker has only completed 54.9% of his passes with 4 TD’s and 4 INT’s. That equates to a QB rating of only 71.9%! Also, it’s not like he was the ultimate leader to help make up for his deficiencies. He was a hot-head coming out of college and is known for being somewhat of a sore loser. I do think he has shown improvement in the leadership part the last couple seasons though.

    Conclusion

Since joining the NFL, the best part of Baker Mayfield have been his commercials. I have to admit they are actually pretty good! The best thing for Baker’s career would be to get a backup QB job somewhere behind a top tier QB who can teach him things both on and off the field. Unfortunately, I don’t know if his career can be saved due to his limitations as a QB. The Big 12 had horrible defenses up and down that conference when Baker was at Oklahoma. It may have been hard to truly judge him as a QB due to that reason.

It’s obvious to me that he struggles when there is pressure in his face and is not able to read defenses and make quick decisions. After taking a look inside the numbers for Baker Mayfield (Along with the eye test), it’s easy to determine that Baker doesn’t have what it take to consistently win in this league. There are only a handful of QB’s on this planet that can consistently win at a high level. The Browns, Panthers, and rest of the NFL have found out that Baker Mayfield isn’t one of them.
