It is now official that the New York Giants and Don “wink” Martindale have reached an agreement to mutually part ways, so the top defensive coordinator will have a job somewhere else next season. The club announced today that both parties have agreed to part ways.
This news follows the heavy back and forth that was going on between the DC and the team following the end of their season on Sunday. It began with head coach Brian Daboll saying how he expected Wink Martindale to return to the team next season, until many reports came out claiming otherwise.
The Giants held out hope that would be able to to make things work with the defensive coordinator but now it has officially been reported that they have agreed to part ways. The coach is now free to head elsewhere and he should get many opportunities as there are a plethora of open coaching jobs and more are coming.
New York Giants Ex Coordinator Cursed Out Head Coach
It was reported by Paul Schwartz that Martindale cursed out the head coach Daboll after firings came down to many of the staff and that he stormed out of the building following an intense standoff. It seems that the firing of different staff members was the final straw for Martindale and that after that there was no way he would return to the team next season.
The Giants did not have the best defense this past season in most categories as they were 27th in total defense and 29th against the run. However, they were in second in the league in takeaways and were very impressive at times throughout the year even with 3 different quarterbacks.
The Giants will now look for a replacement for next season while the coaching carousel continues. This just may be the most movement for coaches in an off season the NFL has ever seen and this specific divorce is one of the most interesting stories of the Giants off season. We will see how quickly Wink Martindale can get other opportunities elsewhere but now we know it wont be for New York.
