New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is looking forward to his third season as the head coach of this franchise. Last Thursday, they drafted wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU sixth overall in the first round. There was a point where the Giants were trying to trade up to three with the New England Patriots for quarterback Drake Maye, but this is a good option as well for this franchise for now.
With drafting Nabers, they are sticking with Daniel Jones at quarterback for now. He will compete with Drew Lock for the starting job. Head coach Brian Daboll said to Jordan Raanan of ESPN about them drafting Malik Nabers by saying:
“There’s a human element, too. If you’re sitting in there and you’re in the receiver room and we draft Malik Nabers, there’s a human element to that, too. So I think you have to be transparent. There’s a draft every year. There’s free agency every year. We start out the meeting by any new players that are here that weren’t here last year, stand up, and any guys that were drafted by Joe and the staff, stand up. It’s different every year. The teams are different. It’s constructed different.”
New York Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll Also Understands the Importance Of Communication With Other Players Like Malik Nabers
Daboll understands that it is important to keep the human element within the game of football despite wanting to do what’s best for the team in order to win. He also added to Raanan by saying:
“”But I think that opens lines of communication whether it’s D.J., whether it’s with Tommy, whether it’s with the receivers, the D-linemen and the linebackers, running backs. I encourage all of our coaches to do that because I think that’s important to be transparent, whether it’s, again, free agency, draft. There’s constant turnover. So the communication lines are definitely very important.”
It will be interesting to see who Malik Nabers catches passes from next season and beyond. It is possible that he will catch passes from either Daniel Jones or Drew Lock in 2024 and then in 2025, the New York Giants finally draft a quarterback for the future with Nabers to grow with.
There is a lot of stepping stones in this process. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll feel safe heading into the future. Drafting Malik Nabers is a nice consolation prize for the New York Giants. Jones had a torn ACL that ended his year last season and also has a history of neck issues. We will have to see if he is the Week 1 starter or not.
