The Miami Dolphins will be without starting outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips for the remainder of the 2023 season. Phillips suffered a torn Achilles in their 34-13 victory over the New York Jets on Black Friday.
The Dolphins will have to rely on Emmanuel Ogbah for the remainder of the 2023 season.
The Miami Dolphins backup started his career in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns drafted Emmanuel Ogbah in the 2nd round, 32nd overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He started in every game during his rookie season, recording 53 tackles, eight for loss, 5.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and three pass deflections.
He started the first ten games of his second season, recording 29 tackles, five for loss, four sacks, five quarterback hits, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. He suffered a season-ending fractured foot in Week 11.
He started in 14 games during his final season with Cleveland, recording 40 tackles, three for loss, three sacks, eight quarterback hits, and eight pass deflections. He missed two games with an ankle sprain.
Cleveland traded him during the 2017 offseason

Cleveland traded Emmanuel Ogbah to Kansas City in exchange for Eric Murray. He appeared in 10 games and made four starts, recording 32 tackles, six for loss, 5.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He suffered a torn pectoral in Week 10 and missed the rest of the season. Kansas City ended up winning the Super Bowl.
Ogbah first and second contract with Miami

He appeared in every game and made 11 starts during the 2021 season, recording 41 tackles, nine for loss, nine sacks, 24 quarterback hits, 12 pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
Ogbah agreed to a 4-year, $65 million contract extension on March 14, 2022. He appeared in nine games and made three starts, recording 11 tackles, one for loss, one sack, and seven quarterback hits. He suffered a season-ending triceps injury in Week 10.
Ogbah’s 2023 season

Ogbah hasn’t received that much playing time this season. He is the third-string outside linebacker behind Jaelan Phillips and Andrew Van Ginkel. He has appeared in only 21% of defensive snaps this season, recording ten tackles, one for loss, four sacks, five quarterback hits, one interception, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble.
Expect Ogbah to split reps with Van Ginkel for the rest of the season. Ogbah has talent. All he needs to do is stay healthy.
If Emmanuel Ogbah plays well, there is a possibility Miami will keep him for another season. If he doesn’t play well, he will be a cap casualty.
