The Texas A&M football program will enter a new era in 2024, its first under first-year head coach Mike Elko. Despite burning ludicrous amounts of money on NIL deals to house some of the best recruiting classes in recent years, the Aggies have struggled to revert to their early 1990s glory. After six seasons with former national champion Jimbo Fisher at the helm, the program parted ways with the frontman following a 6-4 campaign in 2023.
Texas A&M experienced a mass exodus of players following Fisher’s firing and the end of the regular season. However, Elko has done a fine job retooling the Aggies roster, including keeping quarterback Conner Weigman on the roster. However, devastating news surrounding one of their top transfers became public on Sunday. Per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, wide receiver Jabre Barber underwent foot surgery and will miss several months.
Jabre Barber: Hits Shelf For Prolonged Period
Transfer wideout Jabre Barber will miss several months after undergoing foot surgery, per Matt Zenitz. This spring, the five-foot-ten playmaker emerged as a top receiver candidate and punt returner. Barber entered the transfer portal this offseason and earned a three-star grade, according to 247Sports, before committing to Texas A&M football.
Barber, a former two-star recruit from Dothan High School in Alabama, started his college career with the Troy Trojans in 2020. After not recording a reception during his first season, the Alabama native snagged 32 passes for 324 yards and three scores during the 2021 campaign. Barber followed it up with a 25-catch, 351-yard season in 2022. However, his best season came last year, with the wideout registering 75 receptions, 999 yards, and five touchdowns. He also returned 16 punts for 83 yards. Barber shined against top competition, collecting ten catches for 107 yards in his team’s bowl game loss against the Duke Blue Devils.
Texas A&M Football: Wide Receiver Room

The trio of Jahdae Walker, Noah Thomas, and Moose Muhammad remain atop the Texas A&M football depth chart. Walker posted the best stats among the returners, catching 35 passes for 590 yards and two scores last season. Meanwhile, Thomas posted 29 catches for 359 yards and five scores, while Muhammad had 27 receptions for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
With Jabre Barber slated to miss a significant chunk of time, fellow transfer Cyrus Allen could earn more reps. Allen comes from Louisiana Tech, where he caught 46 passes for 778 yards and four touchdowns. Texas A&M also has two freshmen listed on its top three.
