The Wisconsin football program posted a 7-6 record last season, its first under new head coach Luke Fickell. Despite averaging only 23.5 points per game, the 93rd-best average in the country, Wisconsin scratched and clawed its way to bowl eligibility, eventually falling to the LSU Tigers 35-31 in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
The Badgers received an up-and-down performance from SMU Mustangs transfer quarterback Tanner Mordecai, with the gunslinger tossing nine touchdowns against four picks in an injury-riddled season. Fickell and company again turned to the transfer portal this offseason, landing former Miami Hurricanes starter Tyler Van Dyke. In the wake of Van Dyke’s enrollment and the play of backup Braedyn Locke, fellow quarterback Nick Evers entered the transfer portal on Friday, per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.
Wisconsin Football QB Nick Evers: Entering Transfer Portal
According to reports on Saturday, backup quarterback Nick Evers is out in Madison, Wisconsin. Evers, a consensus four-star recruit in the class of 2022, started his career with the Oklahoma Sooners. He played one season in Norman, throwing just one pass while playing backup to Dillon Gabriel and Davis Beville. Evers entered the transfer portal the following season, landing with Wisconsin under first-year head coach Luke Fickell. Evers did not record a pass attempt last season. With starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai sidelined throughout the season, the Badgers turned to Braedyn Locke. The SEC transfer played well in Mordecai’s absence, throwing five touchdowns against one interception.
A two-year starter at Flower Mound High School in Texas, Evers tossed 40 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in his prep career. Under the new NCAA rules, he will become one of many quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal this offseason, allowing two-time transfers to play without missing time.
Wisconsin Football: Quarterback Room
The two-deep for the Wisconsin football program will remain the same, with Miami Hurricanes transfer Tyler Van Dyke leading the way. Van Dyke spent the past four seasons with Miami, headlined by a 25-touchdown, six-interception campaign in 2021. However, he struggled to replicate his numbers the following season, registering 1,835 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and five interceptions across nine games. Van Dyke bounced back nicely last season, tallying 3,2703 passing yards on a 66% completion percentage. He threw for 19 touchdowns against 12 picks.
Braedyn Locke remains the backup, a role he played last season with fellow signal-caller Tanner Mordecai. In 2023, Locke went 76-of-152 for 777 yards and five touchdowns, tossing one interception. A true pocket passer, Locke has 17 rush attempts for -2 yards.
