The Tennessee Titans have been one of the busiest teams in the NFL this 2024 offseason. The Titans outbid the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars for Calvin Ridley. Then the Titans replaced All-Pro running back Derrick Henry with Tony Pollard and managed to orchestrate a deal to bring another L’Jarius Sneed who’s an All-Pro caliber cornerback. They also added Chidobe Awuzie to fix everything they needed in the lagging secondary. Then in the 2024 NFL draft, the Titans selected a pair of top 40 draft picks in offensive tackle JC Latham and defensive tackle, T’Vondre Sweat.
Tennessee Titans Made The Right Moves So Far But It All Depends On This Young Quarterback
The Titans’ offseason moves reflect a club that expects to be a contender in its first season under new head coach Brian Callahan. There’s no doubt general manager Ran Carthon has transformed this roster in an effort to separate these Titans from the run-heavy squads that defined former head coach Mike Vrabel’s success. But none of these changes will matter if the Titans can’t put a franchise quarterback in the middle of it. That poses the question: is Will Levis that guy? and can he take control and lead this team and potentially become a franchise quarterback for this squad?
The key will be how much Levis develops under Coach Callahan. During his rookie season, the quarterback showed off his cannon of an arm and his toughness in the pocket. Hunting the big play can be fun, but can Levis keep the offense on schedule and take the short and easy throws? The good news is that Coach Callahan said early in the process that Levis is a willing learner saying.
“He’s really gotten better in a short amount of time because of the way he approaches his job, and that’s all you can ask for at this point of the year.”
And if worse comes to worse the Titans seem to have a backup plan if things go south. The Titans inked backup Mason Rudolph this offseason to be a veteran presence behind young Levis. Mason Rudolph represents a quarterback who can play the style of football that coach Callahan brings to Tennessee, which is winning the short game, getting the ball out on time, and keeping the offense on schedule. if Levis struggles early on in the season Rudolph could actually end up leading this team in the future, but only if Levis struggles to get the job done.
Is This Decision To Have Will Levis Lead This New And Improved Titans Team To Risky?
Upgrading the roster definitely props up Levis, but it also creates the reality that the Titans will once again be locked out of the top draft slots even if Levis fails. 2025 is expected to be a weak year for quarterbacks in the draft, but there might be some big names available in free agency next season like Jared Goff, Tua Tagovailoa, and Dak Prescott to name a few. Levis is probably Tennessee’s best bet, and there is a “roadmap to success” here even if it takes a couple weeks of the regular season to figure it out.
Carthon’s moves and his team’s buys offseason could be exactly what Will Levis needs to rise up to speed of an MVP-level quarterback. The Titans didn’t really have much of a choice in the matter but to be complacent, but even if the Levis experiment fails, it was worth the shot.
