The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in an interesting position after making the NFC Divisional Round and losing to the Detroit Lions. After having so much money hitting their cap space and paying players after winning the Super Bowl in 2020, the team has some difficult decisions to make, which began today.
It is being reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are releasing two-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion pass-rusher Shaquil Barrett. After the Super Bowl, Barrett signed a four-year, $68 million contract but this move will have the $26.7 million dead money spread between 2024 and 2025.
Some team is about to get a very motivated Shaquil Barrett to dominate the trenches. He struggled a bit last season as in 16 games, he had 4.5 sacks, two pass deflections, three forced fumbles and an interception. He has 59.0 career sacks over the course of nine NFL seasons and could be a threat for any team as an outside linebacker.
It will be intriguing to see how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers move forward with their roster in free agency and the NFL draft.
What do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do at the outside linebacker position?
After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the decision to release Shaquil Barrett, their offseason moves became a bit more intriguing. With significant players now free agents from the team, such as quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Mike Evans, there is a chance a completely different team is on the field in Week 1.
The Bucs are in the top half of salary cap space with more than $43.6 million available so they can significantly add to this roster with free agency or the 2024 NFL draft. Things are going to be intriguing to see how they attack the rest of the offseason.
