Many Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans have been holding their breaths ever since their team lost to the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Rounds. With Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans both poised to enter free agency, it seemed for a while that the team would have to start the 2024 season without at least one of the duo.
However, there is encouraging news from inside the Bucs organization that may suggest otherwise. The informant revealed that both Mayfield and Evans are showing signs that they may want to extend their partnership in Tampa for a while longer.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend reveals Baker Mayfield, MIke Evans’ intentions to stay
According to Yardbarker’s Zac Wassink, Bucs legend Ronde Barker is positive that the two will remain Buccaneers for the foreseeable future:
“I know we have the ability to get them both in under the (salary cap),” Buccaneers legend and Hall of Famer Ronde Barber said about Mayfield and Evans during a Tuesday appearance on Tampa Bay sports radio station WDAE, per the JoeBucsFan website.
His statement supports the claims of former head coach Bruce Arians made in January about Evans’ thoughts on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
“Mike wants to stay here and they’re gonna pay him,” Arians said at that time. “I think Mayfield loves it here and is totally appreciative of the opportunity he found in Tampa. He loves the guys and the guys love him.”
The two have been indispensable for the Tampa Bay offense. Baker Mayfield was a revelation last season, passing for over 4000 yards and 28 touchdowns on an impressive 94.6 QB rating. Meanwhile, Evans posted his tenth-straight 1000-receiving-yard season to complement his 13 receiving touchdowns.
If it’s true that both Mayfield and Evans want to stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then the team may be able to pay both players a little less for the sake of building a more competitive team. With the NFC South still looking ripe for the Bucs, keeping the duo together will extend their sudden championship window even further.
