The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a tough situation to figure out when it comes to their QB room.
Baker Mayfield is almost assured of a big contract after the incredible season he enjoyed as the Buccaneers QB. With the team already under tight budget constraints, they will find it difficult to give him exactly the amount he wants to play.
Since his future with the team is uncertain, it’s only fair for the Bucs to look for possible replacements in case they couldn’t tie the one-time Pro Bowler to a long-term deal. The name that’s being connected to Tampa might make a couple of eyebrows raise due to the professional comparison this prospect has gotten.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers believed to select Devin Leary in 2024 NFL Draft
The Buccaneers are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of Kentucky QB Devin Leary who was tipped to play the same way as the 2017 Heisman winner.
Heavy’s Matthew Davis wrote about the potential selection, who was described by Pewter Report’s Scott Reynold as a capable passer who lacks any modicum of mobility.
One of the main reasons why the Buccaneers are considering Leary is due to his close relationship with Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who coached Leary during his final year with the squad.
Leary first started his collegiate career with North Carolina State, but injuries prevented him from playing his best football. It was when he transferred to Kentucky for his senior year that he managed to put up an impressive-enough season that made him a valuable asset in the NFL.
In his first and final year in Kentucky, Leary put up career highs in passing yards (2746) while also throwing for 25 touchdowns and 7.3 yards per attempt.
Leary himself mentioned that it would be a great opportunity for him to work under his former OC if the Bucs decide to use a pick on him:
“It was an awesome opportunity to learn under Coach Coen,” Leary told reporters at the combine on March 1 via Pewter Report. “He really taught me a lot, especially from an NFL standpoint being able to see it at the most elite level. I think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are getting a really good one. I know he’s going to bring his expertise, his mastermind of the offensive brain. I’m really excited to see what he does with them.”
If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t manage to keep Baker Mayfield, Devin Leary would be a decent QB to start their rebuild with. He has shown he has the passing capability to succeed in the next level. If he manages to keep himself injury free, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t have a successful career in the pros.
