The New York Jets signed a pass rusher ahead of training camp next month. The Jets made the move as defensive end Haason Reddick continues his holdout after the team traded for him this offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Haason Reddick has been a holdout at New York Jets OTAs
As previously discussed on GH by Matt Lombardo, Reddick has missed OTAs this spring as he waits for a new contract closer to $25 million per year. He could miss training camp this summer:
During the Jets’ voluntary OTAs, head coach Robert Saleh revealed that he hadn’t spoken to Reddick and that the 29-year-old acquired in an offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles hadn’t taken part in New York’s offseason program, either.
Reddick is in search of a new contract that pays him more than the $15 million he’s slated to make in 2024 after the final three years of his deal were voided.
The fact that the Jets did not sign Reddick to an extension is one of the pitfalls for trading for a player on the back-end of his current contract, and also a stark contrast to how a franchise such as the Eagles have operated in recent years under general manager Howie Roseman.
The Jets decided to spend money on a former first-round pick than give Reddick a pay raise.
Takkarist McKinley signed with the Jets
Per the Jet’s Website, the team signed Takkarist McKinley:
McKinley (6-2, 260), 28, a former first-round pick (No. 26) by the Falcons in the 2017 NFL Draft out of UCLA, joined the Jets for mandatory minicamp as a tryout player and earned a spot on the team’s roster for training camp.
Over four full seasons with Atlanta, he played in 49 games (25 starts) and recorded 17.5 sacks, 22 tackles for loss and 45 QB hits. He was released by Atlanta in November 2020 and quickly claimed off waivers by the Raiders and placed on injured reserve.
He signed with the Browns during the 2021 offseason and appeared in 11 games (2 starts), registered 2.5 sacks and recorded 3 tackles for loss. In 2022, he appeared in 4 games for the Rams and spent a majority of last season on the Cowboys’ practice squad.
NFL fans’ initial reactions to the signing
The Jets needed depth at pass rusher after losing Bryce Huff. However, it’s a curious decision for the Jets to sign McKinley before agreeing to a new deal with Reddick, who the team already invested in by giving the Eagles draft capital.
Here are the top initial reactions to the signing.
Reddick really isn’t playing this season 💀💀💀

There’s still raw talent there that made him a 1st round level guy, & if we have proved capable of anything it’s being able to help D-Linemen realize untapped potential
If we can get him to even half that potential he showed his last year at UCLA, He’ll be a good rotation piece.
