It was a tough night for the Green Bay Packers last night. In front of their home crowd, they fell behind 27-3 at halftime against the Detroit Lions. While Green Bay showed some life in the second half, it wasn’t enough as a late touchdown from David Montgomery sealed the deal. As a result, the Packers fell 34-17 to fall to 2-2 on the season. Here are three studs and three duds from last night’s game.
Green Bay Packers Stud: Romeo Doubs
The best player on offense last night for the Green Bay Packers was wide receiver Romeo Doubs. Doubs finished the night with nine receptions for 95 yards on 13 targets.
While it was a breath of fresh air to see Christian Watson active last night, it’s becoming clear Doubs is the number one receiver on the Green Bay Packers. Jordan Love trusts him the most and he’s the go-to guy fro the first year starter. Doubs has had a solid start to the season.
Green Bay Packers Stud: Quay Walker
Let’s get this out of the way. It was a dumb penalty on Quay Walker last night to jump the long snapper. He has to know that’s a rule or he should not be out there on the field goal attempt. It resulted in a first down and allowed the Lions to score seven instead of three.
However, Walker had 19 tackles last night. That was by far the most on both sides. He was all over the field and playing smart too. It’s obvious he’s learned how to control his emotions and he’s also off to a nice start in 2023. For as bad as the defense was, he was a bright spot.
Green Bay Packers Stud: Rudy Ford
Rudy Ford added nine tackles and the only interception the Packers forced. It was a bad pass from Jared Goff on the opening drive, but credit Ford for stepping in from of Amon-Ra St. Brown and bringing some early momentum for the Green Bay Packers. However,, the offense went three and out and to settle for a field goal.
Green Bay Packers Dud: Matt LaFleur
This might have been the worst game Matt LaFleur has coached in his tenure as the Green Bay Packers head coach. The game plan right away made no sense for Jordan Love.
The Packers were down their top two offensive linemen and Detroit has one of the best defensive lines in the league. You would think the emphasis would be to get the ball out of Love’s hands early. Instead, Love was in five step drop backs. The line just couldn’t hold and it resulted in five sacks.
LaFleur was visibly frustrated after the game in his post game. He mentioned they need to change how they approach the run defense. He also needs to adjust and put his quarterback in a better position against a good defense. It was a really bad night for the Packers head coach
Green Bay Packers Dud: The Entire Offensive Line
I mentioned earlier the Packers were down their best offensive linemen. It was a still a bad night from Rasheed Walker, Royce Newman, Josh Meyers, Jon Runyan Jr, and Zach Tom. Tom is dealing with an injury and Walker had his hands full all night with Aidan Hutchinson. The running game only had 27 yard on 12 carries.
The line did not do their part keeping Jordan Love upright. Meyers and Newman are becoming weak points on this offensive line nad have been for over a year now. Green Bay needs to address that in the draft in 2024.
Green Bay Packers Dud: The Entire Defensive Line
You never expect a defensive line with Kenny Clark to give up 211 yards rushing. The Packers knew coming into this game they had to put Jared Goff in obvious passing situations. He’s much different quarterback when he’s forced to throw the ball.
Credit the Lions offensive line. That is one of the best units in the league as well, They have done a great job drafting and developing them. They controlled the line of scrimmage all night. LaFleur mentioned that has to change. I am not sure how you change it at this point in this season. These are the players you chose and he has to find a way to make it work.
