We are rapidly approaching the start of the NFL season and the final cuts down to the 53 man roster. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the most depth at the wide receiver position more so than any other position. One guy on my radar to see what happens, is Steven Sims. You can find his Fox Sports profile here. I hope the Steelers keep him in town because the guy has big play potential every snap.
Steven Sims Journey
Sims was an undrafted free agent coming out of Kansas and signed with the Washington Commanders. He had a decent rookie year with limited playing time; He had 34 receptions 310 yards and 4 touchdowns. He is a speedy guy who has not really been given a good chance to compete in a well run organization. In addition to that has not really had a stable offense or great quarterback play to compliment his skill set. 1 game that sticks out to me was back in 2020; I remember a few big third down splash plays during that game that led the Commanders past the Steelers. The guy was open almost every play and he made the Steelers pay for it.
Preseason Performance
So far Sims has looked really good in camp and in preseason play. It seems as though every time the guy gets the ball he is electric and one cut away from taking it to the house. Most notably with rushing and special teams play. As a rusher he has 2 rushing attempts for 49 yards. On special teams he has 2 punt returns for 38 yards. This production number wise may not seem like a lot. When you watch the game and you see this guys speed and lane vision it looks like something the Steelers wanted out of Ryan Switzer and RaRay Mccloud. He has the lane vision, the elusiveness and the breaking speed to really make a game changing play. He adds great depth at both the wide receiver position and in special teams. Where he truly fits in will be determined by Gunner as the guy they brought in to be the return man. Up to this point Gunner has been playing in the wide receiver spot.
One thing I know is the Steelers are always on the bad end of bad luck when it comes to costly injuries. I could sit here and name guys all day long but if you’re a true fan you know how many heart aching moments we’ve had over key injuries. Keeping this guy could be huge, you can never have too many big play potential guys around.
As always thank you for reading! You can always find great Steelers content here on Gridiron Heroics.
