The Kansas City Chiefs announced an extension Wednesday that should put any talk of head coach Andy Reid’s retirement off for at least a season. Reid’s retirement was the subject of much speculation leading up to the Super Bowl.
Andy Reid plans to stay on for the 2024 season
Reid said on Monday that he intended to return for the 2024 season in hopes of winning a third Super Bowl in a row, something no NFL team has accomplished. Per Charean Williams with NBC Sports, Reid said he hasn’t thought about retiring from coaching yet:
“I actually haven’t even thought about [retiring],” Reid said. “I get asked it. I’m still kind of in awe of the game and what went on there, so, I really haven’t thought why or what or anything else. But people keep asking me.
I keep saying, ‘Why did [Bill] Belichick and Pete [Carroll] retire?’ Ask those old guys that question. I’m the old guy now, so I guess I’m going to be asked that. And I really haven’t gone there. I really haven’t thought about it. “
Two days after those comments, the Chiefs extended a key coach for the staff that helped Kansas City win their third Super Bowl in five years.
The Kansas City Chiefs extend their defensive coordinator
Per a statement by the Chiefs, the team signed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to a contract extension. Spagnuolo has been with the Chiefs since the 2019 season.

The extension comes after Spagnuolo won his fourth Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator. Spagnuolo won his first league championship, Super Bowl XLII, with the New York Giants. He had the chance to serve as the head coach for the St. Louis Rams for the 2009-11 seasons but was fired after a 10-38 record in three years.
Per John Galletley with GH, Keven Demoff, the Rams CEO, recently expressed he believes Spagnuolo should receive another opportunity for a head coaching gig following his success coaching the defense of the Chiefs dynasty:
Los Angeles Rams CEO Kevin Demoff also joined in on this praise. He believes that Spagnuolo deserves another opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL. Here is Demoff’s exact quote:
“It is well past time to see Spags get another head coaching opportunity.
The team & organization he inherited in STL was a mess, nobody could have had success. Yet he changed the culture/staff & players believed. An amazing human deserving of the real shot we couldn’t give him.” -Kevin Demoff
Could Steve Spagnulo replace Reid in the future?
Spagnuolo, at 64, is two years younger than Reid, who many reporters speculate will want to retire soon. We’ll see if Spagnuolo intends to try to take a head coaching gig for another team during the hiring cycle next year. Matt Nagy and Eric Bieniemy have been theorized as Reid’s likely successor, but Spagnuolo could be better suited for the job.
Spagnuolo’s extension is real confirmation the Chiefs will retain Reid’s services for the 2024 season. The Chiefs wouldn’t have extended the assistant coach if there were a possibility the team would have to hire another head coach who might go a different way at defensive coordinator.
