After defending Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley for golfing with U.S. President Donald Trump, Stephen A. Smith pivoted to a more political stance on The Stephen A. Smith Show, calling out Democrats for refusing to work with the president based solely on his ideals and policies.
On Wednesday’s episode, Smith criticized members of Congress whose primary goal, in his view, is simply to oppose Trump at every turn. “I’ve heard politicians on Capitol Hill saying, ‘I’m here just to disagree and oppose every d*mn thing Trump wants to do,’” Smith said.
He acknowledged the ideological divide but argued that Donald Trump, known as a dealmaker, is open to negotiating for the greater good. “If you’re not willing to talk and work across the aisle on Capitol Hill, what the h*ll are you up there for?” he asked. “You can’t have this closed-door, closed-minded, resolute belief that allows you the excuse to remain stagnant, therefore ineffective in doing your job!”
While Smith recognized that protest and opposition have their place, he urged Democrats to be more strategic and purposeful. Reflecting on the recent criticism Barkley received and his own ties to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Smith posed a rhetorical question: “If we’re hearing reports that the federal government may diminish funds that were being allocated to HBCUs, and Trump invited somebody like myself to come to the White House and have a conversation with him, I’m not supposed to do that?”

His takeaway? It’s okay to disagree with the president, but effective opposition should be rooted in common sense and constructive action.
Stephen A. Smith for President in 2028?
The idea of Stephen A. Smith entering politics is gaining traction—even with Trump himself. In a recent NewsNation interview alongside Chris Cuomo and Bill O’Reilly, Trump endorsed the ESPN host’s potential candidacy.
“I’ve been pretty good at picking people and picking candidates, and I will tell you I’d love to see him run,” Trump said, praising Smith’s charisma. “He’s got great entertainment skills, which is very important. People watch him.”

Smith admitted he’s been approached by powerful figures. “I’ve had elected officials… and billionaires talk to me about exploratory committees,” he told ABC News earlier this month. “I’m not a politician. I’ve never had a desire to be a politician—but I might have no choice.”
