Monday marked a significant shift for the New York Giants as they bid farewell to their long-time running back Saquon Barkley, who made a surprising move signing with his former team’s division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. After six seasons, Barkley’s departure marked the end of an era for the Giants. However, the team wasted no time filling the void and securing the services of free-agent rusher Devin Singletary, formerly of the Houston Texans.
Devin Singletary, a formidable rusher in his own right, came close to reaching 1,100 scrimmage yards last season, a milestone he has yet to achieve since his NFL debut in 2019. In comparison, Barkley had 1,242 yards of scrimmage the previous year despite having a less supportive team. While the addition of Singletary brings a new dynamic to the Giants’ running back room, some fans still mourn the loss of Barkley’s elite playmaking.
New York Giants Fans: Disappointed Over Running Back Switch Up
The news of Saquon Barkley’s signing with a division rival sparked a flurry of reactions from New York Giants fans on social media. Their disappointment was palpable when the team swiftly announced the signing of Devin Singletary as his replacement. Many fans disapproved, feeling that the team’s mismanaged negotiations over the past few seasons had cost them more years of Barkley’s leadership. Additionally, in their eyes, the signing of Singletary lacked the excitement they had hoped for.

New York Giants: Say Goodbye to Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley will head to the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year, $37.75 million contract after spending six years with the New York Giants. Barkley, the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, earned Pro Bowl honors twice, winning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after tallying a league-best 2,028 scrimmage yards during his inaugural NFL campaign. The Penn State product was amid a solid second season before injuries quickly took ahold of the elite rusher. Barkley rushed for 1,003 yards in 13 games during the 2019 season before appearing in only two games the following season. However, after another down season, Barkley collected 1,650 scrimmage yards and ten touchdowns in 2022.
Meanwhile, Singletary will join his third team in as many years. The five-foot-seven, 203-pound rusher tallied 898 rushing yards on 4.2 yards per carry last season. Singletary has never rushed for 1,000 yards but posted a healthy 4.7 yards per rush attempt during his first four NFL seasons, all with the Buffalo Bills.
