Media personality and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe isn’t the biggest Brock Purdy fan despite the San Francisco 49ers quarterback having an unreal season.
According to Shannon Sharpe, Brock Purdy is NOT a top-tier quarterback.
“He’s not an elite quarterback. He's a product of the system.”

“He’s (Brock Purdy) a product of the system… If I switch places and say ok, you gotta go do what Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) does, I’m not so sure Brock Purdy can do that,” said Sharpe on ESPN’s flagship show First Take on Friday morning. Brock Purdy has led the San Francisco 49ers to a 5-0 record while completing 72% of his passes and throwing for 1,271 yards. He has tossed nine touchdowns to no interceptions while adding another two scores on the ground.
“No, he’s not an elite quarterback. He is a product of a system. It’s more credit to (head coach) Kyle Shanahan,” added Sharpe. The polarizing Sharpe added that Purdy can do less than the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Instead, he believes Purdy leans on his exceptional playmakers to make plays in the open field.
Brock Purdy: NFL Career as “Mr. Irrelevant
Brock Purdy was the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft despite having an incredible career for the Iowa State Cyclones. After injuries to Starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy got thrust into action as a 23-year-old rookie. He thrived, throwing 13 touchdowns against four picks, while the San Francisco 49ers were undefeated with him under center. However, Purdy was injured early in the NFC Championship Game, resulting in a 31-7 San Francisco loss.
The 49ers moved on from Lance and Garoppolo in the offseason, leaving the starting position wide open for Brock Purdy after recovering from elbow surgery. The six-foot-one gunslinger has made good on his situation, with San Francisco undefeated and Purdy squarely in the MVP conversation.
Shannon Sharpe Takes Aim
Shannon Sharpe played 14 years in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors four times, and is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. Sharpe joined the media in his post-playing career but is most well known for his time on FS1’s Undisputed with Skip Bayless. The Hall of Famer joined First Take earlier this year.
Sharpe believes Kyle Shanahan deserves most of the credit for Purdy’s success. The 49ers head coach has gotten tabbed as an offensive genius in most NFL circles.
