The Seattle Seahawks ended the regular season in third place in the NFC West, finishing with a 9-8 record and getting eliminated from the playoffs.
Seattle must get under the cap by March 13 as they were $5 million over the cap.
Thankfully, one of their offensive players agreed to restructure their contract.
The Seattle Seahawks and their starting quarterback agreed to restructure his contract
According to Field Yates of ESPN, Seattle restructured the contract of Geno Smith.
The team has converted his $9.6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. This move has freed up $4.8 million in cap space.
As a result, Smith’s cap number will be reduced from $31.2 million to $26.4 million as his roster bonus will now be spread evenly for the next two seasons.
Although Smith’s roster bonus would’ve been due on March 18, he will receive it now.
Earlier this month, the team let a deadline pass, which resulted in Smith’s $12.7 million base salary being fully guaranteed.
Unfortunately, his cap number for 2025 rose from $33.7 million to $38.5 million, potentially making him a cap casualty next year.
Smith signed a contract extension last offseason
The Seattle Seahawks and Geno Smith agreed to a 3-year, $75,000,000 contract extension on March 14, 2023.
Smith appeared in 15 games in 2023, completing 323 out of 499 pass attempts for 3,624 yards and threw 20 touchdowns to nine interceptions with an 8-7 record, making it to his second Pro Bowl.
He missed two games because of a groin injury.
Expect more roster moves in the coming weeks
As mentioned, Seattle has until March 13 to get under the cap. Now, they are around $430,000 over the cap and expect the team to make more roster moves by restructuring or releasing players.
Notable players who are expected to restructure their contracts or get released include Jamal Adams, Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf, Quandre Diggs, Dre’Mont Jones, and Will Dissly, to name a few.
