Free Agent WR Gabe Davis Still in Play for Steelers Ahead of Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers already caused some stir this offseason with high-profile roster additions and draft choices, and Monday presented another high-profile trade, with cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith coming across to the Steelers, courtesy of Miami. However, it looks like the front office is not finished yet.

Based on a report by ESPN writer Jeremy Fowler, a free-agent wide receiver, Gabe Davis, is still on the table for the Steelers. Fowler added that Davis enjoyed his visit to Pittsburgh earlier this month and that they could sign closer to training camp.

Free agent WR Gabe Davis still an option for Steelers on offense, too. He really enjoyed his visit there. Though he could take his time to sign, possibly closer to training camp.

    Gabe Davis Track Record

Although Davis does not have the same amount of star power as Ramsey, one cannot ignore his potential impact. The 26-year-old wide receiver also comes with size (6’2″, 216lbs.), speed (4.54 40-yard dash), and deep-threat ability, averaging 16.2 yards a reception in his career. Since joining the Buffalo Bills in 2020, he has accrued 2,969 yards and 29 touchdowns.

In 2024, Davis will be rebounding from a disappointing season in Jacksonville, where he could only manage to get 239 receiving yards in 10 appearances. However, in 2020-2023, he never had a season that ended with fewer than 549 receiving yards. His career-high was 2022, in which he recorded 836 yards and seven TDs with Buffalo.

As a Steelers offense that is drastically changing with the incoming of DK Metcalf, a different quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, TE Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey, and an offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith. Gabe Davis would be an important bench player or a good WR3. His resume on the big play and red zone effectiveness may plug well with Metcalf and Robert Woods, as another steady option for Rodgers.

It remains to be seen whether a deal will be made prior to camp, but Pittsburgh clearly isn’t ruling anything out.  And with Davis still on the market, and willing to sign later this summer, there is no reason to be surprised when, in Week 1, he is wearing black and gold.

Stay tuned. The hungry offseason that we have witnessed by the Steelers possibly has another move up its sleeve.
