Report: Geno Smith’s Future with the Seattle Seahawks Exposed

It’s been an interesting couple of years for Geno Smith.

He was first considered a bust after failing to keep his starting spot on the New York Jets. He then took his time and became the talisman for the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. After securing a big three-year contract with Seattle in the offseason, he finished the following season with one that left fans scratching their heads.

While he missed time due to injury, it’s clear that something isn’t clicking the same way it did last year. The future–which seemed certain for Geno at first–is once again uncertain.

The Seahawks will likely give Geno Smith one more shot

Yardbarker’s Adam Schultz reports that the 33-year-old field general will likely be given another year under a new head coach to see if he is the right man to help the team win another Super Bowl title.

However, he also writes that ESPN isn’t exactly sold on his long-term future with the club:

“Smith is coming off a mixed-bag of a season. He was historically clutch in the fourth quarter and posted the NFL’s best QBR over the final six weeks, a span that includes the two games he missed with a groin injury. But even with that strong finish, his production dipped across the board from 2022, including 10 fewer touchdown passes (though also two fewer interceptions) and a completion rate that fell from 69.8% to 64.7%. Just as significantly, he no longer has Carroll — perhaps his biggest supporter in the organization — calling the shots.”

Geno Smith is coming off a rough season that only saw him 3624 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 9 thrown interceptions, and a 92.1 QB rating. All of these numbers were a downgrade from his 2022 numbers.

However, an important thing to note was that he finished the season strongly, reminding the Seahawks front office of his 2022 season that won him his first Pro Bowl.

Geno Smith can only hope that Pete Carroll’s successor would want him to be the guy under center.
