The Seattle Seahawks are trying to make people believe that Geno Smith remains the team’s starting quarterback. However, rumors have continued to swirl doubting the long-term outlook for Smith with Seattle, especially after a front-office maneuver last week that saw the signal-caller’s contract get restructured. Perhaps tired of all the discussions trying to link that restructuring move to the potential end of Smith’s time in Seattle, Seahawks general manager John Schneider decided to speak about it on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Via Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic:
Schneider classified the contract restructure as a routine cap saving measure and not a move that signals anything about Smith’s future with the franchise.
“Other people made a bigger deal out of that than we did in the building,” Schneider said. “‘Is he gonna be here? Is he not gonna be here?’ He was going to be here. It’s a matter of when are we going to tell him we’re doing this with his roster bonus?”
Will The Seattle Seahawks Make A QB Move Despite The Presence Of Geno Smith?
While it is true that Smith is considered the best quarterback option for the Seahawks at the moment, the team has plenty of time to check out other alternatives, with the 2024 NFL Draft and NFL free agency period still ahead. Speaking of which, the Seahawks have the No. 16 pick overall this year, which isn’t high enough to land them someone like a Caleb Williams or a Drake Maye, but they can move up the draft board by making a trade. Or, they could settle with a quarterback with lesser upside compared to Williams, Maye, and Jayden Daniels.
