The San Francisco 49ers knew that they let Super Bowl LVIII get away from them after letting the Kansas City Chiefs get the win on the back of a Mecole Hardman touchdown.
There are plenty of questions for the Niners after losing another winnable Super Bowl game. Coach kyle Shanahan is also under fire from fans after failing to capitalize on the lead his team built during the first half.
However, the coach went out of his way to recognize his team’s efforts despite having to swallow another bitter loss at the hands of Andy Reid and his Chiefs.
San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan: I’m proud of my team
Shanahan cut a somber figure when he faced the media after his team’s overtime loss. It was evident in his body language that he wasn’t in the mood to field questions from the media after another harrowing defeat, but he powered through and addressed multiple questions the press had about his team’s loss.
He was straightforward about his feelings in the game’s aftermath.
“When you’re in the NFL, I think every team should hurt except one,” Shanahan explained. “We got pretty damn close but we couldn’t pull it off.”
He then emphasized that he’s happy with how his men performed throughout the game even if they came up short.
“We’re hurting right now but that doesn’t take away how proud of the guys I am,” the coach said. “I’m real proud of them today, too. It’s part of sports, it’s part of football, it’s part of life. We put ourselves out there, I love our team, we’ll recover, and we’ll be back next year strong.”
Is Kyle Shanahan’s time with the Niners up?
This is the second time Kyle Shanahan squandered a Super Bowl lead as the San Francisco 49ers head coach. If we count his time as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, this is the third time he choked during the biggest game of the season.
There’s no question that Shanahan is a fantastic football coach. In his seven years with the San Francisco 49ers, he managed to transform the team into one of the NFL’s most elite. By acquiring quality players in the draft and making savvy deals in free agency and the trade market, he’s helped build a titan in the NFC West.
However, his Super Bowl reputation was seemingly solidified by this most recent loss. It won’t be strange if the Niners’ ownership group is already considering possible replacements for Shanahan if he fails to win the Lombardi next year.
