The San Francisco 49ers have hired former Las Vegas Offensive Coordinator Mick Lombardi to a yet to be named position on the offensive staff according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Lombardi made his break into the NFL serving under Jim Harbaugh during his stint as Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Lombardi most recently worked under Josh McDaniels before his firing in Las Vegas.
San Francisco 49ers History With Mick Lombardi
Mick Lombardi made his professional coaching debut serving under Jim Harbaugh in 2013 serving as an offensive assistant. He stayed on after Harbaugh’s firing during Jim Tomsula’s tumultuous tenure as Head Coach. He served as a defensive assistant under the reins of Tomsula. He was then retained as a defensive quality control coach under Chip Kelly in 2016. Lombardi had an interesting start to his career as a coach in the NFL, and he will look to make his current tenure look much different than his previous one.
What Mick Lombardi Brings To The Table
Lombardi has had the most amount of experience serving on the offensive side of the ball. As offensive coordinator in Las Vegas, Lombardi’s offense ranked 31st in yards per game and 21st in passing yards per game last season. Lombardi was not tasked with calling plays even though he held the title of offensive coordinator, as Josh McDaniels had play-calling duties.
Lombardi brings a set of experience to the San Francisco 49ers offense, as he has been all around the league learning different philosophies. The 49ers are not going to rely on Lombardi to burden a heavy-load as has been previously asked of him at his previous coaching destinations. This should be a breath of fresh air for Lombardi, allowing him to take a step back and really focus on aspects of the 49ers offense that he is really comfortable with. Lombardi should be able to rejuvenate his career with current stint with 49ers, learning from one of the best play-callers in the league in Kyle Shanahan.
Best case for Lombardi is that he finds his niche in the coaching staff, allowing for upward trajectory over the future years with teams constantly hiring offensive coordinators from the 49ers staff.
