Kyle Shanahan has plenty of explaining to do for the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl LVIII loss. After his most recent loss, his reputation for losing his composure during the biggest games is pretty much solidified.
Of the many issues he has to address, the biggest one is the team’s overtime performance. Many were surprised when it was discovered that the team reportedly wasn’t aware of the new overtime rules that probably cost the team.
Shanahan has gone public with his explanation behind his decision to not inform the team, but it may not be something they will be happy with.
Kyle Shanahan: Knowing new Super Bowl OT rules doesn’t help San Francisco 49ers win
The moment the public was made aware of the team’s decision to not inform the team about the updated overtime rules, members of the media immediately rushed to the coach to get his side on the matter.

Shanahan, as reported by New York Post’s Christian Arnold, insists that he only let the players know about the situation hours before the big game.
Shanahan told reporters Tuesday that while he didn’t have any meetings about overtime in the lead-up to the game, though he said he went over the new setup with his coaching staff and that they relayed the message to the players ahead of the Super Bowl.
“We told everyone as we were waiting for the coin toss to review everyone to make sure they’re sure before we go out,” Shanahan said at a press conference. “So, we asked position coaches to do that. But I didn’t cover it in a meeting on the Super Bowl week. I don’t think that changes anything.”
The rationale behind the decision may have hinged on his trust that the team would be able to secure the win on overtime, or he believed that since the new OT rules are curious, the team shouldn’t focus too much attention on the changes and just focus on their games.

While it may have seemed like the right decision at the time, going first during the game’s OT ultimately cost them the game. Both the San Fracisco 49ers and Shanahan are hopeful that they will be able to right their wrongs in next year’s Super Bowl.
