San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan still couldn’t shake off his Super Bowl struggles. If people thought that his third appearance as a coach at a Super Bowl game would be the charm, then that simply did not turn out to be the case Sunday night, as the Niners lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas, 25-22.
The San Francisco 49ers had a seven-point lead at halftime and a three-point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter., But they faltered when it mattered the most, as the Chiefs were able to beat them via the overtime route. The 49ers actually struck first in overtime with a field goal by Jake Moody, but the Chiefs responded with a game-winning drive that resulted in a walk-off touchdown reception by Kansas City wide receiver Mecole Hardman. With that Hardman score, Super Bowl teams that have Shanahan as either a coordinator or head coach have now been outscored in the fourth quarter or overtime of such games by a wider margin than before.

In Kyle Shanahan’s 3 Super Bowls as an OC or head coach, his teams have been outscored 68-12 in 4th quarter and OT
San Francisco 49ers’ Latest Loss Adds To Kyle Shanahan’s Super Bowl Woes
The loss to the Chiefs was the second for Shanahan and the 49ers at the Super Bowl against the same team, and third overall as either head coach or coordinator of an NFL team under such a scenario. It can be recalled that Shanahan was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons when Matt Ryan and company made it all the way to Super Bowl 51 where they had that infamous “28-3” game versus Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Kyle Shanahan on Brock Purdy:
“I’m so proud of Brock.. How he shows up every week, how he plays… He had an unbelievable year and did a hell of a job today.”
