One man’s loss is another’s gain, and that idiom rings true for the San Francisco 49ers as they enter the Super Bowl with Javon Hargrave in the trenches. He’ll be a key cog for the Niners if they want to slow down Patrick Mahomes from reaching Travis Kelce and the rest of the Chiefs’ WR room.
However, Hargrave sees Super Bowl LVIII as more than just an opportunity to take down a juggernaut of an opponent. For him, this game has a personal stake to avenge a loss that he experienced with his previous team.
Javon Hargrave wants to win with the San Francisco 49ers to avenge Philadelphia Eagles’ loss
Before he joined the San Francisco 49ers on a four-year deal this offseason, he was a part of the Philadelphia Eagles for three years. In the final year of his stay in the City of Brotherly Love, they were defeated in heartbreaking fashion at Super Bowl LVII.
According to PHLY Sports’ Zach Berman, that loss was a painful way to say goodbye to his Eagles tenure:
“That was one of the hardest feelings, hardest memories for me,” Hargrave said.
He then talked about the first year of his massive contract at Levi’s Stadium, the pressures he’s facing, and what he wants to do during his time with the NFC West winners:
“Got to deliver more,” Hargrave said. “That’s still to be seen. This is the first year of it. In the Super Bowl.”
“I’ve done a lot in this league, from getting paid, Pro Bowl, to even making it to the game,” Hargrave said. “I think (winning the Super Bowl) is the ultimate.”
Hargrave is among the best pass rushers in the NFL. With 7.0 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and 28 solo tackles from the defensive tackle position, he backs Nick Bosa up in making the San Francisco 49ers front seven one of the most dangerous pass-rushing teams in the league.
Like most of the players who lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, Hargrave understands the level their opponents rise to during the biggest moments. It will be up to them to stop Mahomes from doing whatever he wants and lead the San Francisco 49ers to glory in Sin City.
