According to Over The Cap, the San Francisco 49ers are $5 million over the cap and need to get under the cap by March 13.
Because of limited cap space, San Francisco cannot afford to re-sign every free agent.
There is one free agent they would like to bring back.
The San Francisco 49ers are interested in re-signing their number three receiver.
General manager John Lynch told reporters earlier today he is interested in re-signing Jauan Jennings.
“Jauan is really important to what we do,” Lynch said via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think he continues to show that. If the tender is the vehicle to keep him around for another year … I think we’re also interested in extending him out. There may be an opportunity to do that. We’ll just have to see where that goes and if we can come to an agreement there.”
Here’s a quick review of Jennings’ NFL career and their options for 2024.
San Francisco drafted Jennings in 2020.
San Francisco drafted Jauan Jennings in the 7th round, 217th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
San Francisco released Jennings during roster cuts and signed to their practice squad in his rookie season. He suffered a hamstring injury, and the team placed him on practice squad injured reserve on October 24. He signed a reserve/future contract on January 4, 2021.
Jennings appeared in 16 games in his second season, recording 24 receptions on 38 targets for 282 yards and five touchdowns. He also had six receptions on nine targets for 43 yards in three playoff games. He was tendered on a 1-year deal worth $825,000 on March 11, 2022.
Jennings appeared in 16 games in his third season, recording 35 receptions on 56 targets for 416 yards and one touchdown. He also had four receptions on seven targets for 67 yards in three playoff games. He was tendered on a 1-year deal worth $940,000 on April 17, 2023.
Jennings appeared in 13 games in his fourth season, recording 19 receptions on 33 targets for 265 yards and one touchdown. He had ten receptions on 13 targets for 111 yards and one touchdown in three playoff games. He also had a 21-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey in the Super Bowl.
What are their options?
Jauan Jennings will be a restricted free agent this offseason, and San Francisco has two options if they want to retain him.
The first option is to tender him. San Francisco has four tender options to choose from. Yardbarker goes into the details about the four options.
The first tender is the right of first refusal without tying it to a draft round. This tender equates to $2.985 million. In this scenario, if San Francisco chooses not to match his contract, they will not receive a draft pick.
The second tender is the right of first refusal at the player’s original draft round. This tender equates to $3.116 million. In this scenario, if San Francisco chooses not to match his contract, they will receive a seventh-round draft pick equivalent to his draft position in 2020.
The third tender is the right of first refusal, second-round tender. This tender equates to $4.89 million. In this scenario, if San Francisco chooses not to match his contract, they will receive a second-round pick.
The last option is the right of first refusal, first round-tender. This tender equates to $6.822 million. In this scenario, if San Francisco chooses not to match his contract, they will receive a first-round pick.
The second option is to sign him to a long-term extension if San Francisco chooses not to tender him and they agree to a long-term extension.
