Why San Francisco 49ers’ Chase Young Is a High-Risk 2024 Free Agent, Explained

After losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the most recent Super Bowl,  the San Francisco 49ers are back to the drawing board this offseason. Chase Young, in particular, is one of the pieces that need to be assessed carefully before the next season starts.

Selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2020 NFL Draft, Young entered the league with a four-year $34.56 million contract attached to his name. Rightfully so, because the defensive end proved to be capable of holding his position against opposing squads.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Chase Young (92) pressures Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) during the third quarter of their NFC divisional playoff game Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Levi’ Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers 24-21.

In his first year in the NFL, Young became the only rookie in league history to record a sack. defend two passes, force a fumble, and recover one to turn it into 47 yards for a touchdown. He finished his rookie campaign with 7.5 sacks, leading all first-year players in that category back then.

Since then, he has struggled with injuries that left him out of action for Washington. As a result, the Commanders traded Young to the 49ers for a third-round pick in the upcoming draft. From there, the defensive end tallied a total of 7.5 sacks for San Francisco and had one in their Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs.

With free agency looming and the end of his contract with San Francisco, teams might be interested in Young to bolster their defensive line. Brad Gagnon explains more in his article for Bleacher Report:

“The good news is the 2020 second-round pick was actually healthy for the entirety of the 2023 season, and he was quite productive when receiving regular playing time during the first portion of that campaign with the Washington Commanders.

The bad news is the sample remains small, as he became a lot less of a factor during a run with the San Francisco 49ers to complete an unbalanced walk year. Young is still just 24 years old, and his talent is undeniable at a premium position. As a result, he’s going to cash in. Where he goes from there remains a complete guessing game,” Gagnon wrote.

If healthy, Young can be a force to be reckoned with on the field. On the other hand, he carries a risk of being a dud due to the past seasons where he succumbed to injuries. In any case, it’d be best to keep an eye out on where Young will land in the offseason.
