The San Francisco 49ers were recently named one of the league’s biggest losers during the 2024 offseason. The 49ers have lost some key players from the squad that made it all the way until overtime before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
The San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl window is open now

The 49ers must go all-in to win the Super Bowl this season, as the team is still able to take advantage of quarterback Brock Purdy playing a rookie contract. It’s unclear what quality pieces the 49ers will have to cut from the roster next year when they extend Purdy’s contract. And that’s nothing to say of what the 49ers will do with Brandon Aiyuk.

Mike Jones with The Athletic recently named the 49ers as a loser this offseason. He thinks the additions the 49ers made this spring have not been significant enough:
After a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the 49ers had a relatively quiet offseason. They gave Christian McCaffrey an extension and drafted Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who might not be ready for prime time until 2025. The offensive line could’ve used a bolster, but John Lynch made no significant additions.
The 49ers didn’t just have addition problems; they made ugly but necessary salary cap subtractions. Losing Arik Armstead to the Jackson Jaguars in free agency will hurt the defense. They were unable to keep Chase Young after trading for him last season. For a team that had problems with injuries late last season, the 49ers have lost quality depth on the defensive line and at tight end.
The defense could struggle this season

Roster turnover is a normal part of life in the NFL. Jones thinks the 49ers’ new defensive coordinator could have problems with the new roster:
Perhaps the most notable departure was defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, whose philosophies never quite meshed with those of Kyle Shanahan. Can first-year defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen reignite a defense that lost Armstead and Javon Kinlaw and added Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos and Jordan Elliott?
Fortunately for the 49ers, they boast one the best offensive skilled groups in the league. Kyle Shanahan’s offense will have to carry the 49ers this season. After all, that’s what is to be expected of the offense if Purdy and Aiyuk earn premium extensions.

The 49ers will be just fine. Every year some writer says that they didn’t do this and didn’t do that but every year they seem to be NFC West Champions, either representing the NFC in Super Bowl or at least in the NFC Championship game. They have a great team, STILL!!!!!! Expect more of the same this year (barring any major injuries)
