A Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback took the necessary steps this weekend to get a leg up in the offseason competition for the starting job this fall. The Steelers have a two-man race for the QB1 job in the upcoming season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a QB competition
The Steelers signed veteran Russell Wilson a few days before free agency started. The team then traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. With Pickett off the roster, they traded with the desperate Chicago Bears for former first-round pick Justin Fields.
The Steelers are expected to have a battle between Fields and Wilson for the starting job in Week 1. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson is in the “pole” position for OTAs and training camp. He will get the bulk of the snaps with the first team this offseason. Fields will get a chance to compete but with fewer opportunities.
Russell Wilson is building chemistry with his receivers
Wilson is building chemistry with Steelers pass catchers before OTAs start next month. According to a transcription on the NFL’s website from Around The 412, Wilson recently worked out with Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth and wide receivers Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson in San Diego. Freiermuth said Wilson has been building a “connection” with Steelers players this offseason:
“I was just down there in San Diego with him working out and throwing routes,” Freiermuth said this week, via Around The 412. “He’s been great at talking to guys and starting to build that connection.
He’s a great guy. You can tell the drive and determination that he has to win and come to Pittsburgh and win some playoff games for us. I think he is going to fit our culture and locker room very well.
Those workouts could help Wilson ultimately earn the starting job. Wilson should have an advantage in putting the ball where those receivers want it before official workouts this spring.
Fields worked out with a former Steelers wide receiver
Fields isn’t staying idle this spring either. Fields was seen working out with a couple of former Bears receivers. One of the players was former Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool.
Fields will have a lot of ground to make up this offseason if he wants to take the QB1 job away from Wilson.
