The Minnesota Vikings suddenly have a new quarterback option if Kirk Cousins doesn’t re-sign in the offseason. The Vikings will have a few questions to answer at quarterback when the regular season ends in early January.
Cousins is set to be a valuable free agent this offseason at a time when the Vikings need to spend a lot of money if they want to keep Justin Jefferson in Minnesota. The Vikings should look to draft a younger quarterback for the future, as tying a 35-year-old Cousins to a long-term contract isn’t in their best interest.
The Minnesota Vikings have another option in the vet-QB market
The Athletic published a piece on intriguing team options for Russell Wilson next season. The Denver Broncos are set to part ways with Wilson after they announced Wednesday they were benching him for the rest of the season.
The Athletic thinks Wilson could be an option for the Vikings if they want to draft a quarterback in April to groom:
“This feels like a Hail Mary of sorts, which, considering Wilson is the subject, seems fitting. The Vikings’ quarterback plans for 2024 are uncertain, as Kirk Cousins’ contract voids at the conclusion of the season and he is likely to have many suitors.
If Cousins signs elsewhere, the Vikings could go after a high-end talent in the draft. In that situation, they’d likely sign a bridge quarterback to allow that youngster to develop. If he’s released, Wilson fits in that category alongside other mid- to lower-tier options.”
Honestly, this feels like a better option for the Vikings than Cousins if they can sign Wilson for one or two seasons. Wilson was putting up good numbers for the Broncos this season before they decided to bench him for monetary concerns.
The Vikings should let other teams overbid for Cousins. The Vikings need to select a quarterback in the first round of April’s draft and let them sit behind Wilson for a year or two. Wilson’s play in Minnesota with Jordan Addison and Jefferson should be better than what we saw with the Broncos this season.
