Only a few teams can say that the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t a dynasty at this point. They’ve made multiple deep playoff runs for the past six years and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Some might even compare their dominance to the New England Patriots of old.
However, a prominent member of the Patriots dynasty believes that the team still needs to pull off one more impressive feat before they can officially be considered as the next NFL dynasty.
Rob Gronkowski: Kansas City Chiefs must win a Super Bowl in five years
The former Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end was asked about his thoughts on the Chiefs’ dominant postseason runs and if they can be considered a dynasty at this point.
While he acknowledged that the Chiefs are a strong football team and almost no AFC team can put a dent on them, he gave out a challenge that would undoubtedly make them a dynasty in his mind.
The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglu writes:
“They are that close to a dynasty. If they win this game, I would say they are a dynasty,” Gronkowski told CNN. “Even if they lose and they won a Super Bowl next year, I would say they’re a dynasty. They just got to get that third Super Bowl win over a decade.”
To casual fans, Gronk may be speaking out of belief that the Patriots teams Bill Belichick coached and Tom Brady led are still leagues above what the Chiefs are currently doing. However, he’s speaking from the point of view of someone who has done it.
The Patriots won their six Super Bowls during the 2000s (2001, 2003, 2004) and the 2010s (2014, 2016, 2018). An entire generation grew up not knowing anything aside from the New England Patriots winning football games time and time again. And that is something no one can take away from them.
This Super Bowl will be the toughest one yet for the defending champions. Their receivers couldn’t catch, they stumbled out of the gates, and controversy always followed them around. Despite these challenges, they still managed to make the Super Bowl.
If the Kansas City Chiefs manage to win another Lombardi trophy at Super Bowl LVIII, no one will be able to argue that the Chiefs were the next big AFC dynasty that teams wanted to bring down.
