Rex Ryan may not be coaching anymore, but his job with ESPN still keeps him involved with the NFL. On Monday morning, Ryan used his platform to blast Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. After saying Staley doesn’t belong in the NFL, Ryan went on to exclaim about his wife “She’d do a hell of a lot better job than this guy’s doing with this defense.” The former Jets head coach didn’t pull any punches when discussing Staley’s performance with the Chargers.

Highlights of Rex Ryan’s Rant
Before even bringing his wife into this mess, Rex Ryan opened up his tirade with “I think he should go back to Division III football where he belongs,” which is a scathing insult. After blasting Staley’s resume, he went on to say “my wife could coach,” the 2020 Rams team Brandon Staley was the defensive coordinator for. Then came Ryan’s remark about his wife coaching the 2023 Chargers defense better, bringing up their payroll compared to on-field performance.
Brandon Staley has been under plenty of fire lately for how his team is performing. After the Chargers fell in Green Bay this Sunday, a portion of Staley’s postgame press conference began making rounds because of how he handled the questions. Rex Ryan addressed that too, saying “You get paid to answer those things, alright? Handle it. The reason they’re questioning you is because you’re atrocious on defense.”
Many people want Staley gone, and Ryan is vocally among them. Sitting at 4-6 with a roster that most people would put among the NFL’s best, it’s difficult to see a flaw in Rex Ryan’s logic. His wife won’t get an opportunity yet, as Staley still has his job. Let’s see if he can avoid a return to D-III football, where he belongs. His next test is none other than the Lamar Jackson-led Baltimore Ravens.
