The NFL is the biggest professional football league in the world, and fans worldwide are always on the lookout whenever the best players are playing.
However, the NFL isn’t the only league you can watch if you want to see exciting American football. College football also has a huge following among American fans, and attention is split between the pro and amateur scenes.
While the NFL still commands the most attention from fans, college football made some moves that may steal fans away from them.
Expanded College Football Playoffs will encroach on NFL season
The format for this year’s College Football Playoff will be different as there will now be 12 teams that can compete for the national title. This means that the schedule for college football’s postseason will be extended.
This meant that some games will be played on Saturdays on the third week of December, when the NFL usually has a couple of games allotted.
The Spun’s Hunter Hodes wrote about the implications about these changes on the NFL season:
“Multiple sources have told me that executives in the league office were not happy about C.F.P.’s chutzpah in scheduling games that day, and they have been left scratching their heads as to why C.F.P. would encroach on their veritable turf,” Ourand wrote, (first transcribed by Awful Announcing).
Even though the league is upset about it, it’s still something that it’ll have to put up with unless something changes.
The last thing the NFL wants is for college football to take the attention of the fans away from the league. While Taylor Swift brought plenty of new eyes into the league, college football has arguably a more passionate fanbase.
While the impact of the new college football playoff on the NFL is yet to be determined, fans can be sure of one thing: they’ll be treated to a wealth of exciting games that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
