The New York Giants signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year deal worth $160 million last offseason. In the first year of that contract, he suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
He has also dealt with neck injuries in the past and according to NFL Network’s Judy Battista, there are some concerns about New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones’s durability moving forward. It was the second time in three years that he had a season-ending injury.
A season ago, he completed 67.5% of his passes for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. Jones also rushed for 206 yards on 40 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
Battista said about the Giants’ concerns about Jones by saying:
“This is a moment where the Giants have to consider their big-picture plans at quarterback because not only did Daniel Jones not play well when he played last year, but there are real concerns about his durability. He’s coming off the ACL right now. He’s had two neck injuries, so you have to worry about Daniel Jones’s health.”
Jones is 26 years old and it appears as if his days of being the Giants starting quarterback are over. They signed quarterback Drew Lock to the roster on Tuesday and it appears as if he is going to be the backup quarterback for the Giants this season.
NFL Network’s Albert Breer Also Mentions That the New York Giants Have Inquired With Teams For a Potential Tradeup into the Top 3 For a Quarterback and Seeing What It Might Take to Get There Because of Daniel Jones
The Giants currently own the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. NFL Network’s Albert Breer went onto the Rich Eisen show to discuss what it would take for New York to trade up into the top three for a quarterback.
The Chicago Bears have the number one pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and it appears as if they are going to take quarterback Caleb Williams from USC. The Washington Commanders have the second-overall pick and they will probably not trade with the Giants.
With the third pick, the New England Patriots own that selection and that would be the most likely scenario for a trade-up with the New York Giants. New England would still get a very talented player with the sixth pick and also accumulate more picks in a trade with the Giants.
New York appears to be desperate to reset the quarterback clock. They either want J.J. McCarthy from Michigan, Drake Maye from North Carolina, or Jayden Daniels from LSU. The days of Jones starting for the New York Giants appear to be over. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen don’t want to rely on Jones’s health in Year 3 and also on Drew Lock.
Drafting a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft appears to be the way to go for them this year. This will be much needed for the franchise with the way they have approached free agency.
