Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave his New England Patriots counterpart, Bill Belichick, the ultimate respect following their Week 15 showdown on Sunday.
While the Chiefs made easy work of the Patriots en route to the 27-17 win, Reid never lost his admiration for Belichick, who is one of the most successful coaches in league history. That much is clear after the Kansas City tactician called the embattled coach the “best to ever do it,” per Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.
It is also worth noting that Reid and the Chiefs chose not to further embarrass Belichick and his Patriots during their latest meeting. Kansas City could have increased the score further with 35 seconds left on the clock when they were on New England’s seven-yard line and facing a goal-to-go situation.
Instead of trying to run up the score, though, the Chiefs took a knee instead. When asked about the decision, Reid said that it “it was the right thing to do.”
The Patriots are already eliminated from playoff contention, while the Chiefs are almost secured of a postseason spot. With that being said, there was really no need for Reid and his men to add more to the score against a team that’s already defeated and no longer have a purpose.
Andy Reid and Bill Belichick are two of the greatest coaches to ever grace the gridiron, so to see the mutual respect they have for each other is definitely incredible. Belichick is actually the second winningest coach with 301 victories, while Reid is at third with 256 (at the time of writing).
Furthermore, Belichick has the most Super Bowl wins as a coach with six, while Reid is fifth (tied with nine others) with two titles.
NFL Record for Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid, New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick
Andy Reid and Bill Belichick did make some history on Sunday night, however. With their meeting, they actually surpassed Don Shula and Tom Landry’s NFL record for the most combined wins by opposing coaches in an NFL game, per Pro Football Hall of Fame.
When Shula and Landry met in a game in 1987, they had a combined winning record of 496. Entering the Week 15 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots, Reid and Belichick had a combined 556 regular-season wins between them.
Sure enough, the next time they meet on the field, Reid and Belichick will surpass that record once again.
It remains to be seen, however, where Belichick will be coaching next season. While Reid is secured with his Chiefs job, the same cannot be said to Belichick with the Patriots. There have been rumors that he could be fired after another failed season in New England, though it has yet to be seen what the Pats will really do.
