The Chicago Bears have a quarterback dilemma— but, maybe, only in some observers’ minds. There are many knowledgeable NFL experts and analysts who feel that the Bears “dilemma” is, actually, a no-brainer. The team will pick USC quarterback and Heisman Award winner Caleb Williams with their overall no. 1 pick in this year’s NFL draft and, before that, they will trade current starting QB Justin Fields.
For many, the writing was on the wall immediately after Chicago fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as well as quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert and running backs coach coach Omar Young. The housecleaning represented the kind of move a team does when they begin a rebuild of sorts.
In this particular case, the rebuild would be at quarterback, in anticipation of a new rookie starter being brought aboard. The reported hiring of quarterback specialist Shane Waldron from his offensive coordinator gig with the Seattle Seahawks would seem to lend added credence to the idea that Chicago will be starting fresh at QB rather than trying to revamp and rebuild what’s already there.
Media pundit Colin Cowherd boldly proclaimed that the Bears would be drafting Williams with their no. 1 pick, but he had a very different scenario playing out. In a bit of a conspiracy theory bend, he would draw lines between the Bears interviewing former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who worked closely with Williams at USC, and the attempt to bring him aboard as a happy, confident draftee.
Cowherd, despite being wrong with his Kingsbury/Williams educated guess, is most definitely not the only media voice insisting that Williams will be in and Fields will be out.
Denver Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright of KOAColorado, in a recent appearance on “The Big Douglas Show” flat-out stated that every one of his sources feels Fields will be dealt prior to the upcoming draft, making room for Williams to come in.
“I think they’ll trade Justin Fields and draft Caleb Williams,” Allbright said. “I know that there are people out there saying that they’re going to hang on to Justin Fields. Everyone, unanimously, that I’ve talked to believes that they’re trading Justin Fields. So, generally when that happens, when I don’t have a single person who believes that they’re keeping him, generally, that means that they’re moving him.”
NFL Draft Analyst Frank Grizzly has piggybacked off the Allbright proclamation, also guaranteeing the football world that Williams will be drafted and Fields will be traded.
“Book it.
It very much seems that former Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams is going to be the Chicago #Bears selection at first overall.
Shoutout to @DougMcCrayNFL for having @AllbrightNFL on his show. If anyone has followed Ben’s work, he doesn’t miss. His intel is elite.”
With Waldron taking control of the offense, nothing has really changed in the Bears-Williams-Fields dynamic. Kingsbury coming aboard would’ve been a major tip off when it comes to what the Chicago front office was thinking. But, no matter what, it looks like the writing is on the wall when it comes to the Bears’ likely call at quarterback.
For general manager Ryan Poles, the team’s decision on a future offensive coordinator was never tied to one QB. Rather, it was about versatility and the ability to work with anyone in that spot.
“It’s really important to see the versatility and the adaptability in their teaching and the way they implement a plan, scheme, adjust,” Poles told ESPN not too long ago, when the search for an OC was still on. “I think it actually makes it pretty dynamic in terms of the interview process.”
Still, widespread change with the offensive coaching staff would appear to not bode well for Justin Fields and his chances of staying in Chicago.

This is going to go down the same way Trubisky did…. This kid is overrated and immature. I’m a huge fan of Poles and what he’s done in Chicago but, this will ensure that Poles time is short lived.
I really wish they’d hold Fields for that 5th year and see if they could develop Bagent. The kid showed flashes and pocket presence that warrant an opportunity to be a starting QB in the NFL.
Who tf wants a cry baby for a quarterback? He should have been pissed not crying.
