The Las Vegas Raiders got a much needed win on Sunday. Las Vegas improved to 2-2 on the season with a 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns. An 18-yard touchdown run by DJ Turner late the third quarter was the difference maker.
After the win, head coach Antonio Pierce had something to say.
Raiders’ HC Antonio Pierce Desperately Tries To Backtrack After Win (Report)
Week 3 brought a wake-up call for the Las Vegas Raiders following their 36-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Coach Antonio Pierce criticized his players for making “business decisions” after the game.
Following their Week 4 win over the Cleveland Browns, Pierce apologized in a press conference for calling out his players:
“There was a lot of hoopla, and stuff,” Pierce said during his September 29 postgame press conference. “Probably started with me, with my comments, and I apologize for that. Don’t want to be a distraction that way but … we just went to work each and every day. Things came out throughout the week and guys just never flinched [or] blinked.”
While Pierce regrets the comments, it clearly resonated with the team as they were much more prepared during the 20-16 win. The defense didn’t allow didn’t allow a single score after the first quarter and the offense showed signs of life. He may not call out his players in such a public way again but it seems that the message broke through.
That said, the Raiders still need to prove that they can handle success and have a big matchup on the road against the Denver Broncos in Week 5.
A bounceback performance by the Raiders, especially on defense, was crucial after their lackluster showing against the Panthers. The defense’s performance against the Browns was praised by Pierce.
One of the biggest differences in Week 4 was how physical the Raiders looked, particularly in the run game. While allowing 92 yards rushing, the team ran for 152 yards.
Continuing to be physical in the run game will help the Raiders avoid performances like the one they had against the Panthers.
